Every once in a while, we will head out to Anna’s Polish Cafe. I love their pierogis and their red borscht. But Chris, what he really likes is the papal cake.

It’s like his crack.

Whenever they have it in, we order one to eat, and then one to take home. And yeah, I did share two papal cakes with Chris today. How we aren’t shaped like Jabba, I’ll never know.

It’s a layered cake that’s made of puff pastry and egg creme and covered in sugar. I mean, who wouldn’t like a dessert like that?

The reason why it’s called papal cake is that it was made famous by Pope John Paul II. He had a great love of this childhood dessert. Before that it was called kremówka. So glad it’s been renamed because I can’t pronounce that.

What’s your favorite dessert?

Even though we were completely stuffed from having so much fantastic food, we went to Porto’s Bakery anyway. It’s a Cuban cafe that serves soups and sandwiches and desserts. We, of course, were there for desserts! Porto’s, at least the one that we went to and I can’t tell you which one because I don’t remember, has two sections. One section is for soups and sandwiches and a small selection of desserts and the other section is just for dessert. We were there around 6:30 and it was totally packed full of people and they were going to close in an hour! There were still tons of people there!

I think this was a raspberry chcolate thingie,a flan thingie and a chocolate thingie.

I originally wanted to get just one thing. I wasn’t hungry, I mean, we just had a ton of food. But when we got to the front of the line, we saw all these goodies displayed that we ended up ordering like four things. And they were totally affordable, like $2-3 each! We ordered the strawberry cupcake pictured below.

A chocolate pudding thing and a guava and cheese pastry.

Guava and cheese pastry you say? It doesn’t sound that appetizing, does it? But OMG, it was delicious. We ended up eating all of it. And then the next day, we regretted not ordering extra like Chris E. did. The Hubs still talks about it lo these many weeks later.

We have to end the week with something sweet and yummy.

Across the street from Waterford Lakes is a yogurt place called Simply Yogurt. It’s a cute little place with Ikeafurniture. They have a big screen tv that usually plays g rated files. I’ve seen Lemony Snicket, Bolt, The Shrek movies, Alice and several others. They are always child friendly, bso you never have to worry about what’s playing there.

Simply Yogurt is one of those places that allow you to make your own. There are several flavors of yogurt including cake batter, cheesecake, taro, and several others. If you dont know which flavor to get, don’t worry! They have small sampler cups you can use to decide which flavors you’d like to have, I usually get only one flavor, but you can get all the flavors if you want! They have both non-fat and non-dairy flavors. However, there is usually one flavor that is non-dairy and that’s the one that I get.

This flavor is called orange burst and I like to put mandarine orange slices and longans in it. They also have Jack fruit and lychee!

This one is the one Chris made. It’s cake batter and red velvet. He’s put peanut butter cups, butterfinger, poundcake, M&M’s and Ghirardelli caramel sauce.

It may look like we didn’t get very much in those cups, but those are big cups. We only got enough to eat and not to take home. You pay by the ounce and we usually get about $6 worth together.

They are a little pricier than Sweet by Miss Holly(by ten cents an ounce, but if you look carefully, that’s an intro offer. It may go up at some point), but we like Simply Yogurt better because the ingredients seem fresher. There are more fruit options at Simply Yogurt and the ingredients seem to be higher quality. Simply Yogurt has Ghirardelli chocolate yogurt as well as chocolate, caramel and something else I can’t remember. Sweet by Miss Holly has Hershey’s syrup that you buy at the grocery store. Plus, there is a place to eat. Sweet by Miss Holly removed half their seating when they installed the frozen yogurt machines. The other half of the seating is usually used up for storage. We took a friend there who usually goes to Sweet by Miss Holly and she too decided that Simply Yogurt is better. It’s totally worth the extra 10 cents an ounce!!

If you’re ever in the Waterford Lakes shopping area, take the time to go across the street to the other plaza were Staples and Sports Authority reside. Take a gander inside and try out some yogurt. You won’t regret it.

There can’t be a week about food without dessert. Usually, after we go to Anmol (and I haven’t stuffed myself full of Indian food), we go across the way to Jeremiah’s . They serve gelati, which is Italian ice with soft serve. You can get just italian ice or just soft serve. I like to get both.

The thing I get is called the scoop froggy frog.

It’s mint chocolate chip, which is my favorite ice cream flavor. And I get it with vanilla soft serve. You can choose to get chocolate if you want. They have several flavors of ice as well. Some of them taste like jolly ranchers will others taste like ass. The great thing is that you can get a sample to figure out which one that you want. The flavors change from day to day, but they always have my flavor as well as chocolate,

The thing with Jeremiah’s though is that there is no indoor seating. You go up to a window to order and you eat outside. It’s fine during the evenings when it’s much cooler. Unfortunately, in Florida, it’s really hot some days and you have to eat your ice cream super quick or it will melt. What I’ve seen a lot of people do is go eat in their car with the a.c. running. I’m pretty good at eating ice cream, but even I sometimes get my hands sticky. The other day, I even spilled some on my shirt.

What I would suggest is to get the small unless you’re a glutton for punishment. The small looks like a large shot glass, but they fill it up above and beyond the rim. It’s enough to make my tummy feel totally full. And they’re only $2.50! I definitely recommend it!

Sweet!

Chris and I are in a little shop called Sweet! They have gourmet cupcakes, frozen custards and yogurt. The man, who seemed to be the pastry chef, was explaining to us all the different cupcakes and what was inside. The first thing that I got there was a chocolate frozen custard that's a lot like soft serve. It was a lovely flavor that wasn't overpowering. Chris got the boston cream pie cupcake that he really enjoyed. Unfortunately, the second time I went, I was rather put off by the owner.

She started telling us about how she used to live in Los Angeles and she's fed Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson and she's worked on movie sets, which totally put me off. I don't care who's had her cupcakes before especially two famous people that have questionable mental capacities. I don't know if it was because she tried to hype herself up by associating with famous people or that she was trying to say that she was running a trendy place to come, but I just didn't like it at all. I may enjoy buying designer things once in a while, but I don't want to be a trend whore. In any case, it made me want to leave that place right away.

But we'd brought our friend and we'd told her the desserts were fantastic, so we stayed. We got a high hat and a strawberry cupcake, neither of which was very good. The strawberry one was so sweet that I could feel the onset of diabetes. Chris called them little prisons for awful tastes.

We also tried the key lime pie cupcake (not so good) and cookies and cream (was good). They have free internet, which is really appealing to me. I could probably sit there for a while doing some work. And since the pastry chef didn't try to wow me with all the name dropping, I'm willing to overlook it from the owner. It remains to be seen if any more of her cupcakes are any good, but I'm willing to try a few more of them. Their frozen custard is still good either way.
